Cecilia specializes in both fiction and nonfiction on the adult side.In terms of fiction, she is looking for stories that feature diverse, layered characters and unexpected plot twists. She adores stories involving moral or ethical dilemmas and is especially drawn to novels about dysfunctional families. Recently, she’s read—and loved—THE VANISHING HALF by Brit Bennett, EXCITING TIMES by Naoise Dolan, and DOMINICANA by Angie Cruz. As a feminist, Cecilia loathes the terms Women’s Fiction—it’s just fiction—but, for the purposes of clarity, that is her favorite genre.
In terms of nonfiction, Cecilia is seeking Psychology, Pop Culture, Science, Business, and Lifestyle from experts in their fields with an original angle, as well as compelling memoirs (long-form or memoir-in-essays). Some of her favorite recent nonfiction reads include INTIMATIONS by Zadie Smith, MAYBE YOU SHOULD TALK TO SOMEONE by Lori Gotlieb, IN THE DREAM HOUSE by Carmen Maria Machado, and WILD GAME by Adrienne Brodeur.
As a mixed race Latinx immigrant, Cecilia is passionate about representing under of misrepresented voices and stories that contribute to a larger cultural conversation. Stories that are centered around feminist issues have a special place in her heart, and characters who grow up straddling two (or more) worlds are immediately relatable to her.
Cecilia does not accept submissions for children’s books, middle-grade, YA, or fantasy. Whatever the genre, do not send her a manuscript where the dog dies—Cecilia can’t handle it.
When she isn’t devouring novels—or dessert—Cecilia can be found enjoying a refreshing Sancerre or a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, writing her own novels, and snuggling with Babaganoush, her adorable English bulldog. Cecilia is also a recovering lawyer but asks that you do not hold that against her.
