University of Guelph Creative Writing MFA graduate Sara Flemington's debut novel, EGG ISLAND, is a contemporary female-driven Huckleberry Finn, blending the eccentricity and dark humour of THE END OF THE F***ING WORLD with the raw sentimentality and prose style of Murakami’s NORWEGIAN WOOD.
The novel features teen Julia's journey from highways and Hutterite colonies to hippie hostels, as she struggles to make sense of her place in the world, her feelings toward home, and how to make genuine and lasting human connections.

Julia’s journey through highways and Hutterite colonies feels so specific and genuine, and it’s lovely to see a trusted editor like Russell Smith acquiring it. This is going straight on my to-read shelf.
EGG ISLAND sounds like a captivating coming-of-age story, especially Julia’s search for belonging and connection. After reading book news like this, I enjoy Wacky Flip which is a physics-based game that makes short breaks fun.
I was drawn to the way ISLAND follows Julia through such different places while exploring belonging, family, and genuine human connection. The mix of humor, emotion, and uncertainty sounds like it gives the story a very personal voice. I enjoy that same freedom to explore ideas in Melon Sandbox, a physics sandbox game where I can experiment with characters, objects, and different scenarios.
