Ruined A Little When We Are Born
RUINED A LITTLE WHEN WE ARE BORN is a collection of stories at the intersection of motherhood, mythology, and female desire. In “White Ash” a couple copes with the kidnapping of their four-year old daughter. In “Ground Zero” a young woman finds out about an unwanted pregnancy during an outbreak of inter communal riots, and she questions her choice. In “Saanwalee” a mother forces her daughter to go through various rituals so she’s fair skinned and beautiful. The stories portray the delights and fears of motherhood; they witness the suppression of desire for girls; and they faithfully render the surreality of grief.
